Katie and Jacob were visiting Estes Park from North Carolina for a little mountain getaway last spring. At first I don’t think they realized how snowy and cold it can still be at these higher elevations during spring. They really wanted their Estes Park couples portraits at a mountain lake. I suggested some of my favorites, Sprague Lake, Bear Lake, and Sheep Lakes in Rocky Mountain National Park. They went and scouted out some of these locations. Although they liked the mountain views here, it was much more of a winter vibe than what they were looking for. Largely due to the lakes being completely frozen over! They mentioned that they loved the look of Lake Estes as they were driving into Estes Park for the first time. We decided to go there, and met at the Lake Estes Marina.
I have shot at this location a few times now. The most memorable shoot there was easily Jessie and Chris’ epic canoe photos there 🙂 I would say the one negative at this location is there are a lot of distracting elements in the background. Sometimes that tough for me as a perfectionist, because I just want to edit every building or power line out of the background. That, however, is so much extra editing work and time for me. I do try and shoot at the best angles to reduce the distractions though. It was all worth it for Katie and Jacob’s photo shoot though, because they turned out beautifully!
These two were such natural on camera! They are really playful and fun together. But they were also very good at being sweet and romantic on camera too. I really loved having this opportunity to work with them and document this point in their love story. This just shows that you don’t need to be engaged to have a professional photography session with that special someone.
All love is worth documenting!
Katie and Jacob selected two outfits for their session. Katie looked really beautiful in her blue romper, which had a lace skirt over top. Jacob kept it neutral in his dress pants and short sleeved white button down. Next he wore a long sleeve maroon button down and dark jeans. She opted for cropped jeans, chunky heels, and a casual beige top. She added a cute felt hat for a few photos at the end. Some great outfit choices for this adorable couple!
This is definitely one of my favorites from their Estes Park couples portraits. I love how golden the sky AND the water looks! As well as their natural, candid laughter.

Thanks so much Katie and Jacob…I hope you guys are doing well! I really enjoyed working together and I hope you had a memorable trip to our beautiful Colorado mountains. On the blog next, Rylee’s cap and gown Mead High School senior session at Coot Lake. Check back soon, and stay warm out there Colorado peeps!
