For years I have been wanting to capture ice skating Colorado winter engagement photos. This winter I went ahead and put out a model call on my Facebook page. I had a lot of interest, and decided on Imani and Logan 🙂 They are not engaged at this point, but that didn’t really matter to me. I just wanted a couple madly in love, that likes to have fun together, and was willing to try ice skating on camera. My afternoon with these two, was incredible! They are just the sweetest people, and brought my vision to life beautifully. And there was only one fall! Which actually happened after we were off the ice lol! Logan slipped on the snow, when they were walking back to the bench with their shoes.
In a state like Colorado you wouldn’t think it would be so darn challenging to find a place to rent ice skates. But that was indeed the major issue we ran into! I figured it would be like ski rentals. You could go to a place like Christy’s Sports, rent skates for the day, and take them back later. I couldn’t find anything like that! There are numerous outdoor ice rinks along the front range. But you have to rent skates there, only for use there. I didn’t love the backdrop of any of these other rinks. I had envisioned a couple having a mountain lake to themselves. There was no other place that would fit the bill so well as the tiny, picturesque Dorsey Lake at the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park.
The other option that I considered was Evergreen Lake. That has awesome views, no doubt. But it is further for me, and it gets insanely busy on the weekends. Dorsey Lake it was! And yes, they do rent skates at the YMCA of the Rockies, but they charge a per person day pass for the ice skating. So that was a pricier option than we were hoping for, but still worth it! I also wish they had some cute white ice skates, instead of these gray ones. But I can’t be too particular…I still had an awesome session with an awesome couple.
Imani and Logan are such a sweet couple. They laughed the entire time. Don’t let the sunshine fool you, it was still pretty cold. I am sure especially for Imani, with bare legs. She didn’t complain at all though…such troopers!
This is definitely one of my favorites from the session. Although you can’t totally tell they are ice skating 😉 That gorgeous light, tender pose, and the stillness it exudes, wins me over every time I look through these images.
Thanks Imani and Logan! If you do get engaged someday, I hope to hear from you guys again <3
Hopefully these photos have inspired some of you too. Any time of year is a good time of year for great photos with the one you love! And whether it’s a summer picnic in the park, a bowling and arcade session, or ice skating for Colorado winter engagement photos, your session can be as unique as the two of you are.
To see photos of another adorable ice skating couple, check out this session with Jenni & Stevn from my Georgia workshop with Bob & Dawn Davis Photography HERE! While we are well into spring now, Colorado is still in it’s 5th winter over here, with snow in the forecast on Thursday 😉 Hopefully it will just end up being rain. Or hopefully this is truly, finally it for the winter season!
